Ducklings day 30

This morning I mucked out the duck house, and captured pictures and a GIF of ducklings flapping their wings, with cute little feathers.

But first, three cam shots from overnight, showing sleepy and active ducklings… but also showing a benefit of the new position of the waterer, letting me see how the level drops overnight:

I gave them a few strawberries; they weren’t sure about that, though ate them:

Ducklings day 26

Today I’ve included a few GIFs of the ducklings, along with the usual assortment of cuteness.

Reviewing the cam recordings, I noticed three ducklings tapping the pop door yesterday morning:

Ducklings tapping door

I’m not sure why; there wasn’t anything out there at the time that I could see on the pond cam; perhaps they’re getting a bit stir-crazy, wanting to get into the pond (though have never seen that door open), or thought it made an interesting noise.

Here’s a GIF of that:

This morning I posted a slow-motion video on YouTube of a duckling dunking their head under the water; it’s a little long, and includes some further and closer clips, so you might want to skip around in the video. Here’s a GIF edition of one dunk and head shake:

Garden lights after dark

Last night I closed up the duck house after dark, and took some pictures of some of the lights around the garden. It’s unusual for us to wander the garden after dark, but it’s quite pleasant.

A spinning garden ornament in the flowerbeds, with a color-changing light. This picture was taken with the flash; you can see the motion blur of the back blade spinning quickly (there was a bit of a breeze):

Ducklings day 19

Today I removed the baby duckling feeder, so they now have the full-sized feeder tube and full-sized water dispenser.

Now that the ducklings are big enough to be able to eat from the feeder tube, I was planning on removing the feeder for young ducklings (actually designed for chicks). Early this morning one of the ducklings briefly got their head stuck in the feeder hole, so that was a sign it was time:

I removed and rinsed out the baby feeder:

The water is cloudy as I dumped the remaining food from that feeder in the water; they might as well eat it from there rather than wasting it:

Ducklings day 17

Today was a rainy day, but the ducklings made their own rain inside the duck house by splashing around in the pool.

Cat update for week ending June 20

For this week’s Caturday, all five feral cats spotted, some in-person shots of Poppy and Porcini, and finishing with a GIF summary of the week outside the cat house.

Edit to add:

Happy birthday Pansy! The feral cat who lives in the back of our shop, keeping it free of rodents, is 6 years old today (her observed birthday, anyway; having been found on the streets, her actual birthday is unknown):

Ducklings day 16

Today, the ducklings discovered the joy of swimming.

But first, I liked the color variations of these three cam captures, of the night-vision, early morning, and lighter morning:

I’ll continue morning and afternoon supervised swims for the next couple of weeks, until their 5th week, removing the tray before I depart each time. After that, I’ll be able to leave the tray in there full-time. About three weeks after that, at about their 8th week, they’ll be able to go into the pond.

Flock Friday for June 19

It’s Friday, so let’s check on the adult birds, in a weekly series I call Flock Friday.

Let’s start with the chickens enjoying some kale treats, while Bert watches and waits for me outside the run:

Bert then followed me across the lawn:

Cat update for week ending June 13

For Caturday this week, 5.25 cabin pictures, 3.25 cat house pictures, 2 shop pictures, 1.25 outside and feeder pictures, 1 breezeway picture, 1 GIF and 1 still from that, and 1 picture out a window. Just some totally irrelevant numbers.

Three cats in the feeder; the SD card in the feeder has stopped working (like the cat house one did recently); I don’t know if I’ll bother trying to fix it, so this might be the last picture from the feeder (though it is recorded by the Camect server, so probably not):
